#Rock-upy Tour! - October 31, 2011

We are taking our bike powered Sustainable Sound system to Washington DC to perform at the Tar Sands Action hosted by 350.org. We are also stopping to perform at Occupy Wallstreet and Occupy DC on the way.  Please visit our kickstarter site and help us raise the money we need for this trip! We need people to help spread the word about our kickstarter as well donate, so please help in any way you can.

There is a profound connection between the occupy protests and the struggle to break free from the oppressive fossil fuel industry. The Tar Sands Action to stop the Keystone XL pipeline represents a stand against the worst kind of corporate greed and moral disregard for human well-being. That's why we're bringing our message of the clean energy revolution in the form of bike powered music!

Melodeego is renting a van for the trip and raising money to cover the travel expenses.  The band will also be transporting some much needed Pedal Power Equipment from Occupy Boston to Occupy Wallstreet to help solve their electricity crisis (their gas generators were confiscated).  We also want to give a ride to YOU if you want to come!

You can donate $60 (or more) and reserve a seat for yourself or a friend.  We have ten seats and need to raise $800, so smaller donations are important too! Check out our rewards :)

Tim DeChristopher - July 26, 2011

It was 4 hours ago I heard of Tim DeChristopher's sentence going through. I jumped on facebook, knowing that his sentence would come today, and that people's statuses would be exploding with the news. I had known for a while that believing he'd be found 'not guilty' was naive. I knew that when this day came, there would be jail time involved, and I knew I would be pissed when it happened. And sure enough, all my projections were correct: 24 months in federal prison, $10,000 fine, and a broken chair in my kitchen from my fit of rage.

I immediately began planning a few acts of solidarity in my head. I sat down and started figuring out the expenses of a trip with the band to Utah to make our own statement. I began writing a song dedicated to Tim. I left a few desperate voicemails on friends phones about our need to rise against this injustice. All these ideas, though, didn't get far past the starting line, before frustration overwhelmed me, and I was spinning in circles, accomplishing nothing. What am I supposed to do about this? What is my role to right this incredible injustice?

As I continue blowing up, reading article after article about the sentence, my friend Justice sends me a message through facebook, asking about some of the logistics for a show we have coming up in Salem. The show is being organized and promoted by several people from the homeless population up there, and I find myself quickly moving away from logistics and into how amazing the work he's doing is. He quickly turns the compliment around on me, and thanks me for what Melodeego is doing. And then it hits me…

This whole time I've been trying to figure out what I can do for Tim DeChristopher, how I can pay him back for the incredible sacrifice he made to save that sacred land in Utah. Truth is, I'm already helping him. He willingly gave up 2 years of his freedom, in an effort to create a better future. And here I am, helping create a concert to empower the homeless, and create a better future for them and the rest of the people of Salem.

So now, the proper reaction is clear to me. Keep on keepin' on, fighting for what is really important, for everybody. Keep doing that, and Tim DeChristopher's sacrifice will not be in vain. It will be just one of many great moments, that 7 generations from now, people will look back on in awe and gratitude.

I can now sleep easy…but not that easy, because tomorrow, the fight continues, and I have much to do to prepare for it!
